The Premier League of Liga de F?tbol Profesional is the top tier of Spanish football. Over the years, it has come to be known as the La Liga.

The league is contested by 20 of the best clubs in the country, and each team plays the other 19 contestants twice. The team with the maximum points on board at the end of the season is declared as the winner. In the case of a tie, the head to head results are used to determine which club is crowned the champion. The three lowest ranked clubs are relegated to the Segunda Division, while the three highest placed teams in the second tier gain a promotion to participate in the top flight.

A total of 58 teams have made an appearance in the Spanish top flight, and Real Madrid lead the line with 31 titles thus far. Barcelona are the second most successful club with 18 titles to their name.

La Blaugrana have the distinction of winning the inaugaral season in 1929, which included only ten teams of which only Barca, Real, and Los Leones have the distinction of having never been relegated from what is now one of the most popular leagues in the world. It boasts of the third largest attendance figures in the whole of Europe, beaten only by the Barclays Premier League, and the Bundesliga.

Teams from the La Liga have always managed to put out formidable performances in the European competitions, as Los Blancos, Barca, and Los Che are in the top ten most successful teams on the continent.

While the Big Two have dominated the league throughout, they have come across stiff opposition in previous years that only promises to get tougher every season. Currently, Barcelona is at the top of the table and looks well set to take home the title.
