Possible upsets - Gameweek 5
Published by Ravin Daswani on September 12, 2009
Here are 2 possible upsets that you should consider for this week before finalising your team’s line-ups:
Hardly implausible: Tottenham over Man U
Although some people may think that this isn’t a legitimate upset call, the fact of the matter remains that the Red Devils are the defending league champions. Moreover, Spurs are now without inspirational playmaker Luka Modric after he suffered a broken leg. Then, of course, who can forget that Spurs let 5 past the last time they faced Man U, even after leading 2-0 at the half! However, this Spurs team has a vastly different feel and, going on the performances to date in the new season, a real never-say-die attitude. Man U, meanwhile, still appear to be fine-tuning their play to account for no Ronaldo.
All things considered, there should be goals for both sides, but Spurs at home will edge out the Red Devils in a thriller. Play your attacking Spurs and Red Devils players if you have them, and perhaps look to Defoe as your captain.
Out on a limb: Chelsea held to no goals
On paper, the chances of Stoke City holding Chelsea at bay for a full 90 minutes are slim to none. However, this is just the type of game where a slip-up from a primary contender can occur. Stoke City will be looking to put numbers behind the ball for long periods with the aim of coming away with a point. And with a well-organised defence (3 clean sheets out of 4 with the only blemish being the 4-0 thrashing at Liverpool) anchored by Sorensen (this year’s Schwarzer) at home, they may well pull it off.
Of course, you have to play all your Chelsea stars, but if you’re thinking about whom to make captain among them, the safer bet is someone on defence. And who knows, if they do succeed in breaking Stoke City down, you could reap big dividends similar to Ashley Cole’s 14 points in Week 4.
