Manchester United started their opening Champions League match away from home in Turkey against Besiktas. The only goal was scored by Paul Scholes after 77 minutes from a headed rebound from a vicious Nani shot on goal. Scholes who received a red card against Spurs last week, is suspended for the next game week. He will return against Stoke on game week 7 and is valued at a bargain of 6 million pounds.
A notable absentee was Rio Ferdinand, who was replaced by Johnny Evans in the starting lineup. He apparently felt his groin injury after Saturday?s game against Spurs. Ferguson stated that it was 50/50 for his return for the Manchester City game on Sunday ? so Fantasy managers please take note. If you fancy Manchester United chances then Johnny Evans could be a good buy for 5.5 million pounds.
Chelsea?s first Champions league match was against Porto at home. Nicolas Anelka (last seasons leagues top scorer), won the game with the only goal after 55 minutes of play. This season he has been overshadowed by Didier Drogba who was banned for this Champions league clash, because of his antics last season. Nicolas Anelka would be a sure buy come Christmas when all the African players leave for their Nations Cup.
Another player who had a great match for Chelsea, was Frank Lampard, who seemed to be back to his best. With a number of shots on goal, it felt like it was only a matter of time before he scored. Unfortunately for him the opposing goalkeeper was having a great game ? denying him of any chances. Petr Cech also had a great game ? saving several Porto chances, who could have levelled the scores on a number of occasions.
