The January transfer window produced an unusual high amount of transfer activity with Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa investing tens of millions in both the best domestic and international talent available. Whilst the transfer of Torres, Bent and Carroll made the majority of headlines, several key signing was made from Continental Europe, increasing the number of options available to Fantasy Football Managers. Three months later and with the Premier League finishing line in sight, Fantasy Football Guru takes a look at the strikers who could just prove to make the difference.
The ‘’Bosnian Diamond’’ arrived at Eastlands in January with a reputation of being one of Europe hottest strikers with an excellent 66 goals in 111 appearances for VFL Wolfsburg. Džeko also has the ability to hold the ball up and provides assists to players such as Carlos Tevez and David Silva. Valued with a 5.9m by the Telegraph, Džeko has been deployed in the majority of games and has already collected an impressive 38 points including 2 Premier League goals.
£23 million man Luis Suárez signature was surprisingly overshadowed by Liverpool’s incredible last minute capture of Andy Carroll from Newcastle. Suárez came with an incredible goal scoring record for Ajax netting 81 times in 110 appearances. Whilst critics will argue his record is highly inflated due to the modest standard of the Dutch Eredivisie, his penalty box instincts should not be ignored. Luis Suárez has gained much praise since his arrival and has cemented his place in Dalglish’s starting eleven. Suárez is valued at £5.9m in Telegraph Fantasy Football and has already collected 31 points including 2 goals.
Obafemi Martins return to the Premier League was announced on 31st January after requesting a move to England to be closer to his family. He returns at a bargain basement price of £1m in Dream Team and looks tempting to those managers who want to take a punt on him rediscovering his scoring form. Valued at a sensible price of £4.8m by the Telegraph, Martins has collected 16 points as Birmingham City look to avoid the drop.
Senegalese international Demba Ba move to relegation threatened West Ham United was finally completed on 28th January, 2011. Demba Ba came with a useful goal scoring record with 37 goals for 1899 Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga. Possibly a Fantasy Football surprise package, Demba Ba has been an instant hit, netting 4 times for the Hammers and is valued at a bargain £3.9m by the Telegraph.
The much travelled ‘’Flying Finn’’ signed on a short term contact after Andy Carrolls departure and injuries to other Newcastle strikers. Considered a target man rather than prolific goal scorer, Kuqi has found his way into the match squad on many occasions. Kuqi is valued at £3.9m in Telegraph Fantasy Football and has received 3 points but more disappointingly for football fans has no bellyflop celebrations to his name.
